Envy, Anger & Sweet Revenge:
Hey, It Works in Hollywood

Make time for a good time. That's what you'll find in Stephen M. Silverman's wickedly funny, extravagantly illustrated guide to the nether regions, where Envy, Anger and Sweet Revenge rule the day - and the nights are a lot of fun, too. With a Tinsel Town spin, the author leads us through the comedic depths and dramatic shallows of some of the greatest scenes ever played - for audiences, and in stars' not-so-private lives.

Table of Contents

INTRODUCTION: IN A TIME OF CHOLER
Wherein the author tells us he's not really a jealous guy or an angry guy or a vengeful soul. We'll let you be the judge of that.

CHAPTER ONE: CURTAIN UP
Hollywood didn't invent the primal emotions although it sure knows how to play them. Hail to the ancient visionaries who handed out the first Academy Awards, the "Homers!"

CHAPTER TWO: NO BIZ LIKE ENVY BIZ
The magnificent and hilarious ways of jealous lovers, studio rivals and other ego-injured stars.

CHAPTER THREE: THE ART OF MAKING SCENES
Angry explosions on and off screen; if you run into certain celebrities, the author's advice is: duck.

CHAPTER FOUR: LINES ETCHED IN ACID
Movies do anger very well. And you can't credit it all to the actors and directors. No one knows rage better than screenwriters.

CHAPTER FIVE: HOW SWEET IT IS
Revenge makes all that envy and anger worthwhile, and occasionally the plotting pays off as well in real life as it does in fiction.

CHAPTER SIX: HAPPY ENDINGS
This is the Hollywood version!

From ENVY, ANGER & SWEET REVENGE

"Green grow the lilacs . . . and the palm trees . . . and the entertainment industry. As Molière observed, 'The envious will die, but envy never.' He wasn't kidding."

Hollywood Has Always Gone for Charm

"Awwwwwwwwwwwwww." - Tom Powers (James Cagney) in the face of Kitty (Mae Clark), in The Public Enemy, Warner Bros., 1931

Is Nothing Sacred?

Genesis - The Back Story

"Actual notes from a recent pitch meeting.

"OK, think Spy Kids, only naked, meet a bunch of evil Charlie's Angels. A bouncer named Stan (Sean Hayes of Will & Grace in his first film stretch), is sitting around the Hellfire club, furious, because nothing is going on. . . .
"Al Mighty (Russell Crowe) sends Stan to Eden . . .On first inspection, Stan is consumed by jealousy over the beauty of Eden. He [decides on] revenge: Destroy it. Stan spies on Adam (Justin Timberlake) and Eve (Britney Spears), who are getting ready for Reptile Night at the club. They're going as cute chameleons. Stan goes as a snake.
"Eventually, he succeeds in getting Eve alone, and offers her a job at the Hellfire Club. They seal their budding business deal with a green apple martini. . ."

Green Apple Martini

1 ounce apple schnapps
1 ounce vodka
1 ounce apple juice

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the above. Shake or stir with malicious intent. Pour into martini glasses and garnish with a thin slice of Granny Smith apple.

Parody? Can one make this stuff up? You'll have to read ENVY, ANGER & SWEET REVENGE to find out. Not that entertainers - despite Jayne Mansfield's naked envy of Marilyn Monroe, or Eminem's towering rages, or Joan Crawford's legendary Oscar-night upstaging of Bette Davis - have a lock on revenge. Ever thinking of great scripts for tomorrow, Stephen Silverman also peeks at what's playing in such heartland hotspots as Cleveland, Ohio and Wilmington, N.C.
