The Santa Book

by Agatha E. Gilmore

Once upon a time Santa Claus wore robes of many colors and had several modes of transportation. Santa's newest biographer, Aggie Gilmore, reveals many surprises about Santa's past in presenting this unique collection of antique Christmas cards gathered from around the world.

This small book is a treasure for a collector of Christmas memorabilia. The book is also set up so that each of its 32 cards may be detached and used.

Aggie Gilmore is a born and bred New Yorker who attended Trinity School and is a recent graduate of Princeton University. Now working as a paralegal in Chicago, she visits New York frequently. Aggie has been a student of Santa lore ever since she can remember.

From her introduction to The Santa Book:

"Father Christmas has come in many guises as the splendid greeting cards here reveal. St. Nicholas has appeared lean under a bishop's hat. In years past, he has worn bright yellow, green or purple or been enveloped in dark robes . . .

"Santa has charged through the snow astride a polar bear or atop a donkey. In some illustrations, he braved the winter's night alone, merrily stomping through the snow or sliding upon it in snow shoes . . ."

In The Santa Book, Ms. Gilmore deftly shows how the plump, rosy-cheeked Santa we love today rose from diverse traditions, some of them magical or scary. She has found an antique Christmas card image to match almost every phase of an evolving Santa. The international collection she has gathered is a small treasure that you may choose to leave intact.

However, the 32 cards have been designed with perforated edges to make it easy to cleanly remove any you'd like to slip in a gift package or mail to a friend.
